130,000 Law Enforcement Officials Mobilized for French National Day Festivities

Approximately 130,000 police officers and gendarmes will be deployed across France on Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14 to ensure the smooth running of the National Day celebrations, two weeks before the opening of the Olympics, announced Gerald Darmanin on July 12. The interior minister stated that 130,000 law enforcement officials, including 11,000 in Paris, will be mobilized to guarantee the security of the festivities. Darmanin also called for respect for this moment of national unity.

Protests Planned Amidst Political Disagreements

The Union étudiante and the Union syndicale lycéenne, supported by several MPs from the France insoumise party, have urged a demonstration on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Place de la Bastille, advocating for a government of the New Popular Front and against what they label a presidential power grab after the early elections. Negotiations on the left stalled on Friday as disagreements arose over selecting a prime minister candidate, with tensions between the “insoumis” and socialists. Meanwhile, the presidential camp strived to demonstrate unity around Gabriel Attal, slated to lead a rebranded Renaissance group.
