Resignation of Admiral Ryo Sakai
Admiral Ryo Sakai, chief of staff of the Japanese navy, announced his resignation on Friday, July 12, following a series of scandals involving unauthorized access to classified data by military personnel. He stated that he would step down from his position as chief of the maritime staff on July 19 and retire, taking responsibility for the oversight of personnel training and organizational management within the force.
Government Response and Disciplinary Actions
The government spokesperson, Yoshimasa Hayashi, disclosed that disciplinary measures had been taken against over two hundred individuals in response to the breaches. He emphasized the importance of public trust in the activities of the Self-Defense Forces and expressed regret over the incidents, urging collaboration between the defense ministry and the Self-Defense Forces to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Previous Incidents and Ongoing Concerns
In April, the defense ministry had reported sanctions against five senior officers for allowing unauthorized access to foreign naval vessel information. Additional controversies, including sexual assault allegations by a former female soldier against three colleagues in 2021, have further spotlighted issues within the Japanese military amid efforts to enhance its capabilities in response to China’s military expansion.
