President William Ruto Dismisses Majority of Government
President William Ruto of Kenya announced the dismissal of almost all members of his government, excluding only the vice president and foreign affairs minister, following chaotic anti-government protests two weeks prior. This decision came after listening to the people of Kenya and evaluating the performance of his cabinet.
Plans for a Restructured Government
During a press conference at State House, the presidential palace, President Ruto stated that he would immediately engage in broad consultations across various sectors and political formations to form an expanded government. This new structure aims to assist in making crucial and urgent decisions.
Background and Unrest
The move to dismiss the government came after President Ruto withdrew a controversial budget proposal on June 26, which included tax increases. This decision followed violent protests where police fired live ammunition into the crowds, resulting in 39 deaths since the initial protests on June 18. The proposed budget had fueled existing discontent against the President Ruto, who had been elected in August 2022 on a platform of defending the most vulnerable but later implemented higher taxes on the population.
