Covid-19 Continues to Claim Lives Worldwide
The World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted that Covid-19 is still causing the death of about 1,700 people per week globally. The UN agency urged at-risk populations to continue getting vaccinated against the disease. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned about the observed decline in vaccination coverage. Despite these deaths, data shows a decrease in vaccination coverage among healthcare workers and individuals over 60 years old, two of the most at-risk groups.
WHO’s Recommendations and Call for Action
During a press conference in Geneva, Mr. Ghebreyesus emphasized that WHO recommends individuals from high-risk groups to get vaccinated against Covid-19 within twelve months of their last dose. More than seven million deaths from this disease have been reported to WHO, although the true toll of the pandemic appears to be much higher.
Global Efforts and Ongoing Surveillance
The virus responsible for Covid-19 was first detected in Wuhan, China, at the end of 2019. WHO urged governments to maintain virus surveillance and sequencing and ensure access to affordable and reliable tests, treatments, and vaccines. It is crucial to continue the global effort to combat the spread of the virus and protect vulnerable populations.
