Hamas stops ceasefire talks in Gaza, condemning “killings of unarmed civilians”

Hamas Stops Ceasefire Negotiations in Gaza

A senior Hamas official informed the Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Sunday, July 14, of the movement’s decision to halt ceasefire negotiations in Gaza after an Israeli army attack that resulted in over 90 deaths according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The Hamas leader, Ismaïl Haniyeh, conveyed the decision to mediators and regional players citing the lack of seriousness from the Israeli occupation and the massacres of unarmed civilians.

Deadly Attacks and Retaliation

Following a new onslaught denounced by Hamas, the Israeli army attacks led to significant casualties. The first strike at the al-Mawasi displaced camp in southern Gaza resulted in at least 90 deaths and 300 injuries. A subsequent attack on a mosque in the al-Shati refugee camp in western Gaza claimed 20 lives. Israel stated that the strikes targeted Hamas leaders Mohammed Deif and Rafa Salama, deemed responsible for a previous massacre, although their deaths were not confirmed.

Escalating Tensions

Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu acknowledged the recent operations against Hamas, emphasizing the identified weaknesses within the organization. Hamas countered Israeli claims, confirming that Commander Mohammed Deif was alive and actively overseeing operations. The situation remains tense as the conflict continues to escalate, raising concerns for further violence in the region.
