Homage to Géraldine
Several hundred people gathered in Paris on the evening of Tuesday, July 16th to pay tribute to a transgender woman who was killed on July 9th in the capital. The event took place near the Trocadéro, where various transgender rights and sex worker advocacy groups had called for a gathering to honor Géraldine, who was murdered in her apartment in the XVI arrondissement of Paris. Participants held white roses or signs with slogans denouncing transphobia and demanding justice.
Seeking Justice
Géraldine’s mother, who came from Peru, spoke at the event, recalling how her daughter had faced exclusion and discrimination from a young age. The gathering also paid tribute to another transgender woman, Angelina, who was killed by her partner in Compiègne earlier in July. The suspect in Angelina’s murder has been charged with homicide based on gender identity and detained.
Challenging Discrimination
During the rally, speakers highlighted the discriminatory nature of the crimes and the importance of addressing issues such as transphobia and violence against sex workers. Calls were made for the repeal of the 2016 law against prostitution, with activists emphasizing the need to combat harmful stereotypes and defend the rights of marginalized communities.
Ending Discriminatory Practices
Organizations such as Acceptess-T, Pastt, and Strass underscored the need to challenge misconceptions and stereotypes surrounding transgender individuals and sex workers. They called for an end to discriminatory practices and urged for a shift in societal attitudes towards greater acceptance and support for all individuals, regardless of gender identity or occupation.
