Protest Against Megabasins in La Rochelle
In the middle of Charruyer Park in La Rochelle on Saturday, July 20, thousands of protesters gathered against the megabasins. The participants had the option to join either a “family” procession heading south or a “popular” and “determined” march heading north towards the port of La Pallice.
Passionate Demonstrations
The protesters expressed their opposition to the industrial and globalized agriculture symbolized by the port, which they believe leads farmers to adopt water-intensive production models focused on export. Chants, musical instruments, and elaborate costumes added a festive atmosphere to the event.
Clashes and Encounters
Among the demonstrators were individuals wearing masks, helmets, and protective goggles. Some sought protection from potential conflicts, while others dressed in black as part of the “black bloc” movement. Clashes occurred, resulting in vandalism such as broken bus shelters, overturned glass containers for projectiles, and a broken store window.
Police Presence and Tensions
Law enforcement, who had deployed a significant number of officers in the Poitou region, closely followed the demonstration. The authorities encircled the march on Edmond Grasset Avenue, leading to concerns about the legality of the tactic and the potential for escalation due to the lack of official authorization for the protest.
