Israeli Airstrikes in Hodeidah, Yemen
On Saturday, July 20, Israeli airstrikes targeted Hodeidah, a city in western Yemen controlled by Houthi rebels. The attacks resulted in casualties, although an exact count was not provided. The Israeli army stated that the strikes were in response to the numerous attacks against Israel by the Houthi regime in recent months. Violent explosions were reported in the port city of Hodeidah, which is a stronghold for the Houthis, according to an Agence France-Presse correspondent on the ground.
Reactions and Escalation
Houthi official Mohammed Al-Bukhaiti vowed retaliation, stating that the “Zionist entity” would pay the price for targeting civilian installations. He warned of escalating the situation further. Meanwhile, spokesperson Mohammed Abdel Salam emphasized the Yemeni people’s support for Gaza in response to the Israeli offensive against Hamas. The Houthis have been conducting attacks on ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, claiming solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza and causing disruptions to global trade routes.
International Response and Actions
In December, the United States, in alliance with Israel, established a multinational force to safeguard navigation in the strategic maritime areas. Since January, the US, with assistance from London, has carried out numerous airstrikes in Yemen. These actions have been aimed at curbing Houthi activities and preserving maritime security in the region. The situation remains tense, with risks of further escalation and disruptions to international shipping routes.
