Israeli Prime Minister’s Address to a Divided Congress

Netanyahu, facing accusations of war crimes and crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court prosecutor, was set to deliver a speech to a divided American Congress regarding his handling of the Gaza conflict. Amid tensions between the U.S. and Israel, Netanyahu aimed to leverage the close alliance and military support the U.S. offers to Israel. The Israeli leader was scheduled to meet with President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former President Donald Trump to discuss the ongoing situation.

The Gaza Conflict: A Humanitarian Crisis

The conflict escalated when Hamas commandos carried out an attack in southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,197 people, mostly civilians. In response, Israel launched a devastating air and ground campaign on the densely populated Gaza Strip, leading to a humanitarian catastrophe. According to Gaza’s health ministry, the conflict has claimed the lives of 39,145 people, predominantly civilians, and has exacerbated an already dire situation in the region.
