Salman Rushdie Attacked in New York
For the first time, Hezbollah has been explicitly mentioned by Washington regarding the aggression suffered by writer Salman Rushdie in New York state on August 12, 2022. On that day, Hadi Matar, a young Lebanese-American, stabbed the world-famous author of “The Satanic Verses.” The US Attorney General Merrick Garland accused Matar of committing an act of terrorism on behalf of Hezbollah, a terrorist organization linked to the Iranian regime.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
Hadi Matar, a 26-year-old American of Lebanese descent, is facing federal charges including support for a foreign terrorist organization. This comes after being indicted by a grand jury for attempted murder and assault. Matar, who was living in New Jersey near New York City, is also facing local charges and has been in custody for almost two years. He pleaded not guilty to the charges, and a trial is expected to begin in October.
Salman Rushdie’s Recovery and Works
After the attack, Salman Rushdie, who suffered injuries including the loss of vision in one eye, published a book titled “The Knife” in which he shared his thoughts on death and love. Rushdie, born in India in 1947, is a renowned author with numerous literary works to his name. He faced controversy and threats after the publication of “The Satanic Verses” in 1988, leading to years of living in hiding under police protection.
