Ismael Zambada Garcia, also known as “El Mayo,” and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, were arrested in El Paso, Texas. They face charges in the US for their alleged involvement in the production and trafficking of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid.

Role of Sinaloa Cartel in Drug Trafficking

The Sinaloa cartel is accused by the US of being largely responsible for the widespread distribution of fentanyl in America and the related violence on both sides of the border. In 2023, the US recorded over 107,000 overdose deaths, with fentanyl contributing to approximately 70% of them.
