Historic Withdrawal of Joe Biden
Less than two weeks after Joe Biden’s historic withdrawal from the race to the White House, thousands of party delegates began voting on Thursday to choose the vice-presidential candidate as his official replacement. The party delegates have until Monday to cast their votes.
Kamala Harris Clinches Democratic Nomination
On Friday, August 2, the Democratic Party ended the speculation by announcing that Kamala Harris had secured enough votes to win the Democratic nomination for the U.S. presidential election. More than 2,350 delegates have already voted for Ms. Harris, making her the sole candidate in this election. Jaime Harrison, the Democratic Party president, stated that virtual voting was ensuring a candidate would be selected by August 7 to avoid legal issues in Ohio.
Harris’s Acceptance Speech
During a virtual call with her supporters, Ms. Harris expressed her gratitude for being the presumptive Democratic nominee for the U.S. presidency. She acknowledged the hard work of delegates, state leaders, and staff in making her nomination possible. Ms. Harris will officially accept the Democratic nomination next week at the party convention in Chicago, scheduled from August 19 to 22.
