Fencing at the 2024 Olympics: Ukrainian swordswomen’s Olympic title thrilled the Grand Palais

Olga Kharlan: From Fencer to Dancer

The fencing track transformed into a dance floor as the notes of the hit song Freed From Desire echoed in the Grand Palais on Saturday, August 3. Olga Kharlan took to dancing on the track where moments earlier she had made the decisive touch, waving a Ukrainian flag amidst the cheers of an emotional crowd. The Ukrainian sabre fencer has evolved into more than just an athlete since July 27, 2023, when she refused to shake hands with the Russian opponent she had just defeated at the Fencing World Championships in Milan, Italy. Despite being a symbol, Olga Kharlan remains primarily an exceptional sportswoman who recently achieved a remarkable feat after sixteen years.

Outstanding Sporting Achievements

Olga Kharlan first gained attention at the 2008 Beijing Olympics when, at just 17 years old, she shifted the tides in the first-ever women’s team sabre final in Olympic history. Facing a four-point deficit against China, with remarkable composure, Kharlan turned the match around and secured the gold for Ukraine. Fast forward to the present day, at 33 years old, she replicated this exceptional performance. In a nail-biting match against South Korea, trailing by three points when she entered the fray, Olga Kharlan clawed her way back, spurred on by a chanting crowd, ultimately triumphing over her opponent, Jeon Hayoung.

Emotional Victory and Significance

As she sealed the victory at 45-42, Kharlan, known for her victorious shouts, initially appeared incredulous, turning towards the referee. Reflecting on her state of mind post-win, she stated, “Today, I was like a robot. The strategy was to set emotions aside. These are the Olympics; it all comes down to emotions.” This Olympic title marked a historic achievement for the Ukrainian delegation in Paris, with additional victories in shooting and fencing categories. Kharlan’s bronze in the individual sabre event, where she was defeated in the semi-finals by French fencer Sara Balzer, added to Ukraine’s medal tally.

Symbolism and Personal Beliefs

Amidst the backdrop of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, with Russian athletes largely excluded from the Paris Olympics due to the invasion of Ukraine, Olga Kharlan stands as a beacon of resilience. She shared the principles that guided her to success, stating, “Believe, work hard, never give up… like Ukraine.” Her resolute actions and achievements not only symbolize sporting excellence but also reflect the spirit of determination and solidarity with her homeland.
