Trong’s mandate was set to end in 2026. The secretary general of the Party in Vietnam holds a significant role, overseeing the National Assembly and serving as the country’s premier.

To Lam, aged 67, expressed gratitude for his appointment and emphasized the urgent need for his leadership within the Party. He pledged to continue the anti-corruption efforts initiated by Nguyen Phu Trong, assuring that the fight against corruption will persist, regardless of the individuals involved.

Born in 1957 in the communist North of Vietnam, To Lam has a background in the public security sector. Throughout his career, he has faced scrutiny for the increased surveillance of dissidents and the handling of various legal cases pertaining to corruption and fraud. Despite controversies, including a public scandal involving a luxurious meal in London, To Lam has successfully maneuvered within the political landscape to secure his position as the head of the country.
