Iran: a man executed for the killing of a soldier during the 2022 protests

Execution of Gholamreza Rassaï

Gholamreza Rassaï was hanged in the morning of August 6th in the Kermanshah prison. He had been sentenced to death in October 2023 by the criminal court of the western region of Iran. The Islamic Republic often employs the law of retribution in murder cases, with ten men having been executed in connection with the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini while in custody.

Context of Protests

Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, became a symbol of widespread protests after her arrest for violating Iran’s strict dress code. The region of Kermanshah, where the army colonel was killed by Gholamreza Rassaï, was a focal point of the unrest. Hundreds of people, including security personnel, were killed across the country, with thousands being arrested.

Other Executions

In addition to Gholamreza Rassaï, three Iranians were executed on May 19 for their involvement in the deaths of law enforcement officers. Accused of “waging war against God” and possessing weapons during a demonstration in Isfahan, they were put to death. Meanwhile, popular Iranian singer Shervin Hajipour, originally sentenced to three years and eight months for anti-regime activities, saw his sentence halved as his song “Baraye” became an anthem of the protests.

Judicial Developments

Prior to these events, the Supreme Court of Iran had overturned the death sentence of another artist, rapper Toomaj Salehi. The country continues to grapple with internal tensions and international scrutiny over its handling of dissent.
