Theft of Banksy’s Latest Artwork
A new piece by Banksy appeared on Thursday, August 8th in London, the fourth in four days, was stolen just an hour after being claimed by the mysterious graffiti artist. The renowned street artist from Bristol had posted a photo of his latest creation on Instagram in the early afternoon: a wolf painted on a satellite dish fixed to a rooftop, as is his habit to authenticate his works on social media. Witnesses spotted men seizing the object in the Peckham neighborhood in the south of the capital and taking it away. The police were called for the theft of the satellite dish containing the artwork before 2 pm. This incident marks the fourth artwork in four days by Banksy in the streets of London, a frenzy unusual for the artist who usually spaces out his creations by weeks or even months.
Speculation on Banksy’s Animal-themed Artworks
Banksy’s recent animal-themed artworks have raised various speculations on their meaning, with some interpreting them as references to the climate crisis, the Olympics, or the conflict in Gaza. The appearance of a goat on a wall in Richmond, elephants with their heads out of windows in Chelsea, and monkeys hanging on a railway bridge in Shoreditch have sparked discussions on the potential messages behind these creations. Some have also linked these artworks to recent far-right riots in the UK, considering Banksy’s past support for refugee causes.
Theft of Previous Banksy Artwork
In late December 2023, two individuals were arrested by the London police following the disappearance of another Banksy artwork – three aircraft drones mounted on a traffic sign in Peckham. The piece, quickly authenticated by Banksy on Instagram, was snatched by individuals in a rush, highlighting the desire for Banksy’s valuable works. Previous incidents of theft involving Banksy’s artworks, including a stolen traffic sign painting in London, emphasize the high value and collectibility of his pieces.
