New Party Emerges in Thailand
A new entity called the People’s Party has been formed in Thailand following the dissolution of the main opposition party, Move Forward, by the court. The People’s Party has chosen Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut as its leader with a mission to prepare for the 2027 elections.
Court’s Decision and International Response
Move Forward party leader, Pita Limjaroenrat, along with ten other party leaders, was banned from politics for ten years by the Thai Constitutional Court for allegedly seeking to destabilize the monarchy. This decision was criticized by the United Nations, the United States, and human rights groups, who condemned it for jeopardizing political pluralism in favor of the pro-democracy camp.
Continuity from Move Forward
The People’s Party inherits the orange color and a triangular logo similar to its predecessor. It aims to be a party of the people, for the people, to empower the population and move Thailand forward, echoing the principles of Move Forward party that sought reforms in monarchy, military, and conglomerates.
