Federal Investigation into Iranian Cyber Attack on Presidential Campaign
The Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States has launched an investigation following Microsoft’s disclosure on Thursday, August 8, that a “presidential campaign” was targeted in the U.S. by a hacking attempt attributed to Iranian intelligence services.
Media Outlets Receive Internal Campaign Documents
At least three American media outlets – Politico, the New York Times, and the Washington Post – received internal campaign documents from an “anonymous informant” just before Microsoft’s report was published.
Possible Compromises and Security Measures
Roger Stone, a close associate of former President Donald Trump, acknowledged that two of his personal email accounts were compromised, and the FBI stated that these accounts were used to send malicious emails to Republican Party executives.
Increased Security Posture in Response
Both the Trump campaign and the Kamala Harris campaign have stated that they have enhanced their cybersecurity measures in response to the cyber attacks.
Historical Context: Previous Campaign Cyber Intrusions
In 2016, the campaign of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton faced significant disruption due to the hacking and publication of thousands of emails from the Democratic National Committee, with Russian intelligence services being identified as the perpetrators.
