Introduction
On Tuesday, August 13, browsers attempting to connect to the online portal of Paris-Saclay University displayed the message “This site is inaccessible.” The higher education institution fell victim to a ransomware cyberattack on Sunday, August 11, as it revealed the following day on the social network X. Ransomware, a method used by cybercriminals to extort data from organizations through malicious software or encrypt and lock their computer systems to demand ransoms, is a tactic frequently employed in such incidents. Just a week before, around forty museums, along with the Grand Palais, were also targeted by ransomware.
Response to the Cyberattack
At Paris-Saclay, a crisis team was established, as stated by the institution to Agence France-Presse (AFP), although specifics regarding the consequences of the cyberattack were not provided. The university indicated that it is receiving assistance from the National Cybersecurity Agency of France (ANSSI) to address the incident. As of now, ANSSI has not responded to AFP’s inquiries.
