Violent Attack by Israeli Settlers in Palestinian Village
Dozens of Israeli settlers carried out a violent attack on a Palestinian village near the city of Qalqilya in occupied West Bank on Thursday, August 15. The attack resulted in the death of a 23-year-old Palestinian man named Mahmoud Abdel Qader Sadda, who was shot by the settlers. Another Palestinian was seriously injured by gunfire to the chest during the incident. Israeli army spokesperson confirmed that a group of Israeli civilians, some masked, entered Jit village, set vehicles and infrastructure on fire, and threw stones and Molotov cocktails.
Israel’s Response and Condemnation of the Violence
In response to the incident, Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned the disturbances and labeled the perpetrators as an extremist minority that tarnishes the reputation of law-abiding settlers and Israel as a whole. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also addressed the situation seriously, promising that those responsible for criminal acts would be arrested and prosecuted.
International Views on Israeli Settlements
The Israeli settlement activities in the West Bank are frequently criticized as a violation of international law by the UN, which considers them a major obstacle to achieving a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. The surge in violence in the West Bank since the start of the conflict in Gaza has resulted in numerous casualties on both sides, further exacerbating tensions in the region.
