300 acres consumed in a fire in Hérault, over 500 firefighters deployed

A wildfire broke out on Sunday, August 18th, at around 3 p.m., burning over 300 hectares in the town of Gigean (Hérault) and heading towards the heights of Frontignan, as announced by firefighters and local authorities.

Firefighting Efforts

The fire started 150 meters from the A9 highway but is moving in the opposite direction, towards the Gardiole massif, according to the prefecture. Several houses at the foot of the massif have been evacuated and protected. To combat this pine forest fire, two Dash planes, five Canadair planes, and three helicopters are deployed, confirmed firefighters to Agence France-Presse.

Emergency Response

The Hérault prefecture reported that 400 firefighters from the region are involved, with additional support coming from Bouches-du-Rhône (80 firefighters and 80 Marseille firefighters). The town of Frontignan, with a population of 24,000, located southwest of Montpellier, has activated its local emergency plan, the prefecture emphasized.
