In the United States, the Republicans initiate impeachment proceedings against Joe Biden, three months before the presidential election.

Republican Members of Congress Launch Impeachment Procedure Against President Biden

Some Republican members of Congress initiated a new impeachment procedure against President Joe Biden on Monday, August 19. This move coincided with the opening of the Democratic convention. Despite their low majority in the House of Representatives and internal divisions on this initiative, the procedure was launched following accusations in a parliamentary report of corruption by Democratic leader Joe Biden in relation to his son Hunter’s foreign business dealings.

Allegations and Reactions

The President of the House Judiciary Committee, Republican Jim Jordan, claimed that the investigation definitively proved that Biden had abused his public office for the financial benefit of the Biden family and their business associates. House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer echoed these sentiments, asserting that the evidence from their impeachment inquiry presented the strongest case ever examined by a sitting President of the House of Representatives. The report mainly consists of insinuations and inferences based on the father-son relationship, reiterating arguments long circulated by Republicans.

President Biden’s Response and Republican Strategy

President Biden, who is scheduled to bid farewell to his party at the Democratic convention in Chicago to pass the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris, has consistently denied any involvement in his son’s controversial affairs in Ukraine or China. Republicans have persistently sought to exploit Hunter Biden’s troubles, including his substance abuse issues, in an attempt to tarnish his father’s political reputation. Despite previous efforts by Republicans to impeach Biden, they have not garnered enough support for a House vote. These endeavors are often viewed as retaliatory actions following the two impeachments of Donald Trump in 2019 and 2021.
