Attacks Across Ukraine

Explosions were heard across the territory, from east to west, including in areas relatively spared by the war, such as Kharkiv, Kropyvnytsky, Dnipro, Lviv, Loutsk, Kiev.

Ukraine Targeted by Russian Attack

On Monday, August 26, Ukraine experienced one of the most significant missile and drone attacks by Russian forces since the invasion began in February 2022. The strikes hit certain energy infrastructure in fifteen regions, causing five deaths and dozens of injuries.

Escalation and Response

The attack came as Ukrainian forces claimed progress in the Russian border region of Koursk since their incursion launched on August 6. President Volodymyr Zelensky reported more than a hundred missiles and drones launched by Russian forces and called for European aviation support.

Russian Statements and Targets

The Russian defense ministry stated a “massive strike” was conducted on energy sites and electrical substations in nine regions. Gas compressor stations in Lviv and Kharkiv were hit, along with the hydroelectric plant on the Dnieper River upstream from the capital.

International Response

Polish and allied aircraft were deployed into Polish airspace due to intense Russian bombings near the border. In Kyiv, anti-aircraft defenses were activated early in the morning, leading residents to seek shelter in underground metro stations while emergency electricity cuts were made.
