Death of American Pro-Palestinian Activist in the Palestinian Territories
The director of Rafidia hospital in Nablus, in the northern West Bank, announced on Friday, September 6 in the afternoon the death of a 26-year-old American pro-Palestinian activist who arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head. According to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA, the young woman was killed by an Israeli soldier’s shot. The Israeli army, when queried by Agence France-Presse (AFP), stated that they were “aware of the circulating information” but were not able to comment or react immediately.
Background and Circumstances
“A pro-Palestinian American activist arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head, and we pronounced her dead around 2:30 PM,” stated Dr. Fouad Nafaa, director of Rafidia hospital, contacted by phone from Jerusalem. WAFA reports that the fatal incident occurred near Nablus, in Beita, a Palestinian town where an American activist had reported to AFP in early August that he was injured by an Israeli soldier’s shot during a protest against the expansion of Israeli settlements in the region. WAFA specified that the slain activist was part of an international solidarity campaign called “Fazaa”, engaged in defending Palestinian farmers against Jewish settlers.
Escalating Violence in the West Bank
Since the beginning of the war on October 7, 2023, in the Gaza Strip between the Israeli army and Hamas, triggered by an unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement, violence between Palestinians on one side, and the Israeli army and settlers on the other, has intensified in the West Bank. At least 661 Palestinians have been killed by shots from Israeli soldiers or settlers, according to data from the Palestinian Ministry of Health, and at least 23 Israelis, including soldiers, have died in Palestinian attacks or military operations, according to official Israeli data.
