The cyclone Bebinca strikes Shanghai after causing multiple fatalities and displacing thousands in the Philippines

Typhon Bebinca Hits Shanghai and East Coast of China

Dozens of millions of residents in Shanghai and the East Coast of China took refuge in their homes on Monday as Typhoon Bebinca passed through, the strongest to hit the region since 1949. With winds reaching up to 151 kilometers per hour, it is “the strongest typhoon to make landfall in Shanghai since 1949,” according to Chinese television CCTV. All flights were canceled at the two main airports in Shanghai.

Impact in the Philippines

Prior to its arrival in China, six people were killed in the Philippines by falling trees caused by Typhoon Bebinca, which hit the center and south of the country on Friday with strong winds and flooding. Tragic incidents included the death of four children in a southern province when a tree fell on the motorized tricycle they were riding during the storm.

Consequences and Response

In China, the typhoon prompted the evacuation of coastal residents, closure of highways, and cancellation of flights. Authorities issued orange typhoon warnings for several districts of Shanghai and surrounding provinces. The storm displaced thousands of people and caused damage to infrastructure.

Overall Impact

Each year, around twenty strong storms and typhoons hit the Philippines and surrounding waters, resulting in loss of lives and significant damage. Typhoon Bebinca serves as a reminder of the destructive power of natural disasters.
