Nintendo Initiates Legal Action Against Pocketpair
Nintendo has filed a patent infringement lawsuit at the Tokyo court against the Japanese studio Pocketpair, developer of Palworld. The legal action is aimed at protecting Nintendo’s intellectual properties and seeking financial compensation. Despite similarities between the creatures in Palworld and Nintendo’s Pokémon, Nintendo’s lawsuit focuses on patent violation rather than intellectual property infringement.
Nintendo’s Legal Strategy
Nintendo’s decision to pursue a patent infringement case, rather than a copyright claim based on the resemblance to Pokémon characters, indicates a strategic shift in their legal approach. While Palworld initially drew comparisons to Pokémon due to its creature-catching mechanics, the gameplay of Palworld diverges into survival and construction elements.
Industry Response to Palworld
Palworld garnered significant attention with over 19 million players within two weeks of its launch in January 2024. However, the game’s concurrent player numbers on Steam have gradually declined over time. Despite this, major players in the gaming industry, such as Microsoft and Aniplex, have shown interest in capitalizing on Palworld’s success through partnerships and offerings on their platforms. Aniplex’s collaboration with Pocketpair to establish Palworld Entertainment aims to expand the brand through merchandise and related ventures.
