Leave? Stay and commit? Since October 7, 2023, for French Jews, “everything is different”

Shana’s Decision to Make Aliyah

Shana, a 23-year-old Jewish student studying law in Paris, had never imagined leaving France, a country she feels deeply connected to. However, everything changed for her after the Hamas terrorist attack in Israel on October 7, 2023. Shana, who now goes by the name Marie on Uber, has been experiencing increased anxiety and fear due to the rise in antisemitic acts and sentiments in France.

Rising Departures to Israel

In response to the escalating antisemitism, Shana is planning to make aliyah to Israel on November 6, joining 1,660 French citizens of Jewish faith who have made the same decision between October 7, 2023, and August 31. This marks a 50% increase compared to the previous year. While this surge is significant, it is essential to consider that 2023 had recorded historically low numbers of Jewish emigration from France.

French Jews and Their Connection to Israel

Emmanuel Sion, the director of the Jewish Agency for Israel in France and francophone countries, notes that French Jews are not fleeing the country solely due to antisemitism but rather have a strong bond with Israel. Despite the recent events in France, the Jewish population remains confident in the country’s efforts to ensure their security. The decision to make aliyah is seen as an individual choice borne out of personal convictions rather than a mass exodus.
