The Political Tensions Between Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire
Once again, the junta led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré in power in Burkina Faso claimed to have thwarted several destabilization attempts. The Burkina Faso security minister accused civilians, as well as military personnel, of participating in subversive activities, pointing fingers at Abidjan as the base of these operations.
Allegations and Arrests
The Burkina Faso government accused the Ivorian authorities of harboring Burkinabés engaged in subversive activities, causing friction between the two nations. Young Ivorians trained in weapon handling in Burkina Faso were allegedly intended to carry out destabilization operations upon returning to Côte d’Ivoire.
Foreign Relations and Discord
Since Captain Ibrahim Traoré seized power in a coup in September 2022, tensions between Ouagadougou and Abidjan have escalated, with each side accusing the other of destabilization attempts. Both countries have experienced incidents along the border, leading to mutual arrests and hostile public statements, straining their historically close relationship.
