The Iranian strikes on Israel highlighted the military strengths and weaknesses of the Islamic Republic.

The Iranian Missile Attack on Israel

The recent rain of missiles launched by Iran against Israel on the night of October 1st to 2nd was seen as a display of strength by military experts. However, it also exposed the weaknesses in the Iranian military. Following Tehran’s response to Israeli attacks in Lebanon and the elimination of Hezbollah’s leadership in recent weeks, the Iranian arsenal appears both feared and limited, raising concerns about the conflict’s escalation.

Israel’s Defense

Despite Iran’s intentions to cause damage and casualties, Israel’s multi-layered missile defense systems, including Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow, managed to intercept a significant number of the incoming projectiles. The United States also contributed by launching interceptors from destroyers deployed in the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Oman.

The Iranian Missile Program

Iran has developed a diverse arsenal of rockets, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles since launching its missile program in 1983 during the Iran-Iraq war. This arsenal, estimated to consist of thousands of units, is considered one of the most varied and significant in the Middle East. Despite facing international sanctions since 2006, Iran has managed to build a credible missile program, posing a threat not only to Israel but also to other countries in the region, such as Saudi Arabia.

Iran’s Regional Threat

Iran has demonstrated the capabilities of its missile program through attacks on various states in the region. From damaging oil facilities in Saudi Arabia using drones and cruise missiles to launching attacks on American bases in Iraq and Syria, Iran has shown its willingness to use its missile arsenal for strategic purposes.
