Suspicion of Student Slapping Teacher in Tourcoing
An incident occurred at a high school in Tourcoing, Nord, involving a student suspected of slapping a teacher who asked her to remove her veil. The student was placed in police custody on the evening of October 7, following a formal complaint by the teacher. The teacher, specializing in medical-social technical sciences at Sévigné high school, reportedly requested the student to remove her veil in the school courtyard. However, the student, about to leave the premises, refused. Subsequently, the student allegedly slapped the teacher, who retaliated with a slap herself, leading to further physical altercation as stated by the police source. The student, a legal adult with no prior police record, fled the scene but was apprehended at her residence at 6:40 PM and placed in custody.
Response and Actions Taken
Regarding the incident, the Minister of Education, Anne Genetet, announced that a temporary measure has been issued to restrict the student’s access to the school pending a disciplinary hearing. Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, the minister called for strict disciplinary actions while mobilizing a security team from the regional educational authority to the school. The stance of supporting the teacher and upholding the principles of the Republic was echoed by various public figures including former Minister of the Interior Gerald Darmanin and Xavier Bertrand, President of the Hauts-de-France region. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation as an assault on the values of the Republic and the fundamental tenets of secularism upheld by the school community.
