Despite a swimming scare and a delayed start, Cassandre Beaugrand crowned world triathlon champion after her triumph at the Paris 2024 Olympics

Cassandre Beaugrand’s Road to Becoming World Champion

Before the race, Cassandre Beaugrand had openly stated that her ultimate goal for this year and the past few years had been the Olympics. This past Saturday, on October 19th, in Torremolinos near Malaga, Spain, she made history by becoming the first Frenchwoman to be crowned world champion in triathlon.

Overcoming Adversity on the Path to Victory

Throughout the years, Beaugrand had come close to securing the world champion title multiple times, finishing second in various categories. However, this time, she overcame challenges right from the start of the race. Despite getting seriously off track during the swimming portion, a rare mishap in triathlon, Beaugrand managed to catch up during the transition to cycling with a remarkably fast swim.

Transformation Through Change and Dedication

Beaugrand’s dominance in the sport in recent months can be attributed to her decision, back in 2022, to move to Loughborough, England, leaving behind the sunny Montpellier for a more conducive training environment. This move not only allowed her to be with her partner, British champion swimmer Hector Pardoe, but also provided her with the necessary balance and support to excel in her athletic endeavors.

A Resounding Victory and Display of Strength

Being the top-ranked athlete before the race, Beaugrand’s victory in Spain solidified her position as the world champion. Despite an initial setback in the swimming leg, she left no doubt about her superiority during the race, accelerating early on in the running portion and leaving her competitors trailing behind. With a 37-second lead over the second-place finisher, Beaugrand claimed her title as the undisputed queen of triathlon.

An Embrace of Triumph

Beaugrand’s triumph not only showcased her own capabilities but also brought joy to her fellow competitors. Her nearest adversary, Beth Potter, and friend, Emma Lombardi, both acknowledged Beaugrand’s exceptional performance. Lombardi’s third-place finish in Spain was a satisfying moment for her after missing out on a medal in the recent Paris event, earning her a spot alongside Beaugrand on the overall podium.
