Free’s Data Breach
Free, the telecommunications operator, recently disclosed details of a data breach that exposed personal information of some of its customers. The breach included data such as names, email addresses, postal addresses, phone numbers, subscriber IDs, IBANs, and contractual information.
Breach Details
The breach was claimed by an unidentified individual on the site BreachForums, where a sample of the stolen data was put up for auction. This sample included postal addresses, phone numbers, IBANs, and details of the victims’ subscription plans.
Extent of Impact
While the hacker asserted that millions of Free subscribers were affected, the operator, owned by Iliad Group, has yet to confirm the exact number of customers impacted by the breach. Free reassured customers that no passwords were compromised, and that credit card information was not affected. However, the risk of fraudulent activities using the stolen IBANs remains.
Response and Actions Taken
Free took immediate action by filing a complaint with the public prosecutor, notifying the CNIL, and informing the ANSSI after detecting the cyber attack. Despite these measures, Free did not respond to inquiries from Le Monde at the time of this report.
