Devastating Floods in Southeast Spain
In the southeast of Spain, devastating floods have claimed the lives of at least 95 people, with 92 of the fatalities occurring in the region of Valencia. The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, has urged residents of the affected areas to remain indoors due to the ongoing risk posed by the severe weather.
Extreme Vigilance Required
The floods, described by the Spanish press as the “floods of the century”, have caused widespread destruction in Valencia, the hardest-hit region. Additional fatalities have been reported in neighboring areas, with the overall death toll expected to rise as there are still many people reported missing.
Unprecedented Rainfall and Devastation
Meteorologists have reported that in just eight hours, the equivalent of a year’s worth of rainfall fell in certain neighborhoods of Valencia, leading to extensive flooding. The floods have destroyed numerous city infrastructure, including bridges, roads, railways, and buildings. Valencia, known for its citrus fruit production, has seen its agricultural lands submerged by the deluge.
