Inondations d’octobre : 375 municipalités obtiennent la reconnaissance du statut de catastrophe naturelle

Recognition of State of Natural Disaster

The state of natural disaster has been recognized in 375 communes, as per an order published in the Official Journal on Tuesday, November 5th. This recognition pertains mainly to the exceptional floods that occurred from October 16th to 20th, particularly affecting the Center-East and the South regions.

Affected Departments and Compensation Process

The state of natural disaster applies to eleven departments, enabling the way for insurance compensations. The concerned communes are located in Ardèche, Rhône, Loire, Alpes-Maritimes, Yvelines, Essonne, Lozère, Loire-Atlantique, Eure-et-Loir, Haute-Loire, and Corrèze.

Extent of Damage and Impact

Most communes are recognized for floods and mudslides during the period from October 16th to 20th. The Center-East region, especially Ardèche, suffered significant consequences. Over a thousand individuals were evacuated, roads, railways, and schools were closed, and several thousand households lost electricity.

Weather and Climate Change Connection

Météo-France specified that Ardèche experienced the most intense Cévenol event recorded over two days since the early 20th century. The rise in natural disasters correlates with global climate change.
