Cinq ans après la mort de George Floyd, une cérémonie de commémoration organisée à Minneapolis

Commemorating George Floyd’s Death

On Sunday, May 25, the United States commemorates the death of African-American George Floyd, killed by a white police officer five years ago, sparking strong popular mobilizations. The arrest and murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, gave new momentum to the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, which aimed to address deeply rooted racism issues in the U.S., from police brutality to systemic inequalities.

Current State of Affairs

However, since Donald Trump’s return to power in January, his administration has halted civil rights investigations and curtailed diversity hiring initiatives. Recently, the Department of Justice announced dropping charges against the Minneapolis and Louisville police accused of violence following the deaths of African-Americans in 2020. Meanwhile, BLM has lost some of the initial support it had during the widespread protests that reached the doors of the White House during Trump’s first term.

Memorial Ceremony and Ongoing Struggle

Despite these challenges, a commemoration ceremony is set to take place at what is now named the George Floyd Square, where the 46-year-old was suffocated by officer Derek Chauvin, whose actions led to Floyd’s death. The square in a residential area of the northern city is adorned with protest artworks, including a purple mural reading, “You changed the world, George.” This optimistic message contrasts with the speculation that extreme allies of Trump might suggest pardoning Derek Chauvin, convicted of Floyd’s murder.

Continuing Calls for Reform

Family members of George Floyd, including his aunt Angela Harrelson and cousin Paris Stevens, emphasize the need to keep pushing for reforms despite the hostile political climate. They, along with others, observed a moment of silence and laid yellow roses at the site where Floyd’s fatal arrest was captured on video. Their determination reflects the ongoing activism and fight for justice in the face of challenges.
